Being a truck driver is as dangerous as anything else in the Army.

You pick soldie s up and you drop them off at the range. You drive the LMTV and FMTV around during Basic training and AIT. I am not sure if they drive equipment around that would reguire more training, like a fork lift training and mod training and such because you have to learn how to manivuer the vehical so when you go around a turn, a person does not turn the entire vehical over or run into other vehicals. If you are talking about war, I do not know if they will be tranporting troops in the war, if so they use extra armor plating on the vehicals and use troops who are trained to detect IEDs (explosives on the road) and they have rigged the opening to the hatch on the HMV's so the IED cannot go into the HMV, it bounces off, the net on top. I would rather be the driver, then be the person sticking out of the top of the Hummer. If this is what you are asking.

Just being a soldier is dangerous but know this: all convoys are well protected with security inside the convoy and overhead. Thousands of convoys are on the road weekly and very few run into the attacks you see on TV. His choice of skills benefit not only other military with his deliveries many of the missions also help families of Iraqis, local communities, and the civilian experts we have in country fixing their infrastructure. You should be very proud of him.

His job is just that: driving trucks. It's dangerous insofar as IEDs are a threat to convoys, but at the same time, with uparmoring being what it is, the trucks are more resistant these days to explosives. Also, he's going to be going in with Humvees in front, so chances are the trucks aren't going to be hit by anything. All that, of course is assuming:
1) he gets deployed
2) he ends up in a hot area
3) his convoy gets hit by a well set up IED (not as common as some would have you believe)

Truck drving over the open road is risky as a profession and is generally less risky in the Army as troops tend to move more slowly and in caravans.

If he is stationed stateside or not in a war zone, the risk is not that bad. I spoke with a friend retired from that army that is here having coffee with me, and I was also in the army, though that was back in the 70's. Anyway he said that a truck driver today has a good chance of duting in Iraq and that has proven to be a very risky propositin over there.

However just being in Iraq is pretty risky. My friend said unless your bf got a guaranteed duty station in writing in his contract, his chances of seeing duty in Iraq or Afganistan are quite high.

Sorry, but that is what he said.

Probably no less or more dangerous than any other army job.
It could be a very smart move. After the Army, what? What he learns will have a ready market when he is discharged.

And there is certainly a shortage of good drivers today. And the starting pay is very good.
My best wishes to you and him.

It all really depends on where he is stationed at. Most of the time, they just make sure the trucks are up and running and they drop off or pick up troops and supplies. Now if he is sent out to Iraq or Afghanistan, its a little different. The roadside bombs are designed to take out those trucks, so its very dangerous. Hopefully he will be stationed out here and **** his choice, he should have going Marine Corps Infantry, Get Some!!!

i was once an 88m (truck driver), i drove LMTVs and FMTVs in the National Guard. Transportation is a highly deployed branch right now. in Iraq most classes of supply are brought to each FOB by trucks. This is very dangerous to do because you are seen as a soft target for IED strikes followed up by ambushes. No offense to him but also National Guard transportation soldiers are not the best trained for fighting, they just arnt trained for it, and yet they are the ones who always seem to get caught in ambushes. Their best asset is the gun trucks that they have escorting them. These trucks are embedded with the convoy and provide close support, also close air support and medivac support is never far away.

good luck to him, and to you

Driving truck in the national guard isn't that bad. My husbands in the national guard and is driving truck for the next 4 months on orders. He said it's boaring.
As long as he's in the states he's just going to be driving trucks and moving equipment and things like that unless their is a state of emergency in which he then might have to transport people depending on the type of truck he's driving.
Now if he gets sent oversea's then his job will probably come with a higher risk due to land mines and things, but I really dont know to much on truck driving oversea's.
Keep in mind that national guard jobs are realitively safe unless deployed and then safety depends on job and location of deployment. For the most part you shouldn't have anything to worry about except the possiblity of your bf being gone more then you thought. My husband is gone a lot w/ the guard, but that also has to do w/ our location, amount of work, size of unit and and his work ethic which makes him a top pick when it comes to "jobs" or "orders" whatever word you choose to use.
Hope this was helpful.
