I just got my Class A CDL, without a truck driving school could I still get a job with a trucking company?

truck driving
nathan asked:

I got my CDL license from lineman school and am trying to get a apprentice lineman job but it's a long process. I'm considering taking advantage of my new license and driving a truck, I was wondering if trucking companies hire people without any trucking experience that did not go to truck driving school?

yes, there are such companies, but keep in mind the economy and then realize how many experienced drivers are looking for ANY driving
job. Experience will come first.

When it comes to hiring newly licensed drivers, companies most times will chose the driver that got their license through a trucking school rather than one that got it on their own. Reason being that there is more to obtaining the CDL then just passing a road test, and you would've been taught some of this in the trucking school.

Besides, companies always prefer to hire someone with 2 years experience… which brings up the question… How can one get a job with no experience, if you can't get the experience to begin with. Kind of a catch 22.

If you do find a company that will hire you with no experience, I would not be surprised if it is a job nobody wants. Or if it is a reputable company.

Try looking at larger companies that may extend your training, but you may be stuck with them for a specified period of time if they incur any 'costs' in further training you.

yes you can, a trucking school is just a way for people to get a CDL that doesn't know anybody with their own truck or work for a company that has CDL trucks, but let me tell you, at the lineman job you'd drive a straight truck that requires a class B but it would require a class A if your pulling a trailer, so even if you had years of experience as a lineman it doesn't count as over the road experience in a semi truck because the experience only counts if its OTR driving for a trucking company, but with the way the economy is, its just going to be less companies hiring inexperienced drivers, i remember companies that would take inexperience will only take experience now, i tried out trucking about 2-2 1/2 years ago but i plan on trying it out again, if you get hired at a company you'll have to ride with a trainer for however long the company has it set up, depending on the company it could be for just 2 weeks or could be as much as 1-2 months, or they might go by mileage and not time, also each company is different with the amoutn of time you stay out ont he road and how much time you get home, also companies usually have different types like all 48 states, regional and dedicated

look into US Xpress or Schneider National, those 2 i know for sure take inexperienced, just can't remember anymore off the top of my head, i tried out with US Xpress the first time, but just be ready to have to travel out of state to the nearest terminal of the company, could be in the same state or could be 500 or more miles away, the company will pay for a bus ticket on Greyhound usually, just make sure to look on the company's website real good or even call the company's recruit department before you apply
