Truck Driver…..?
.357mag asked:
I am thinking about becoming a semi-truck driver. Can anyone that is or has been one let me know about the pros and cons of the job. How much would you expect to make just starting out. I am a 25 year old male in Michigan. Thanks.

pros- you get to have an easy job(driving around), good pay, meet many people, have plenty of alone time.
cons- boring and tiring job, hard on your family members cause you are barely ever home
this is all i can think of but i hope this helps.
the pay is fair, hours are long, and if you think all you'll be doing is driving, forget it.
you also have to load and unload, and deliver the freight.
i am the warehouse manager at a large canadian transportation company, there are alot of rules and regulations involved in trucking, some you'll like, some you wont.
check it out before you sink any money into it.
STUPID BOY!!!!
You live next to my house and you think of becoming a Driver. I will contact your Parents.
Theres alot of different types of truck drivers,
I am a Concrete Mixer Driver and depending where you live and what contract your under we make some good bucks and were home every night, if you can get on with you city or state as a driver even better, like EBMUD,
Do yourself a favor, check out the pay for a
Pipe-fitter or Elevator repair.
First things first, as a newbie, you are going to get conned by almost every company out there. Been there, done that. The hours are long, you will be away from your home a lot. The notion that you will get "to see the country" is misnomer. Yes, you will see the country, but you will see it go by in your windows, as the "scenic over-looks" are usually off limits to big-trucks.
If you are a loner, then this is the job for you. Again you will be by yourself a lot. You will meet a lot of different people while you are at the terminals. ABout the only real exercise you will get is loading or unloading the freight, that is if you are required to do it. Not all companies require the driver to do it.
As glorious as becoming an owner operator might sound, don't do it until you have at least a year under your belt. The cost of fuel is astronomical coupled by the fact that trucks usually only get between 5-8 MPG. So if you have second thoughts in that first year, you are not stuck with a monthly payment of $1,300.00 to $2,,200.00 on top of your fuel and maintenance costs. Then and ONLY then, do you get to pay yourself.
