As a truck driver, what do you look for in working for a trucking company? Benefits? Pay?
Asa K asked:
What do you look for when you a searching for a job, and what would be some things you wished trucking companies offered? Time off? Home on weekends? Pay? Benefits? 401k and retirement planning? Insurance???

Lots of different TYPES of driving jobs. OTR, Company, Local, Delivery, Owner/Operator, Logistics. Along with Reefers, Flatbed, Tanker, etc… A lot to consider when making a decision.
There is a lot of money to be made driving if you are the right type of person. I have had teams on my boards that made $2k EACH per week. That is rare but it IS possible. They had a lease payment to take out of that because they were leasing the truck as owner operators.
A "company" driver will probably make in the 30 - 35 cents a mile range. Figure with present DOT regulations, you can run about 600 miles a day solo and perhaps 1200 as a team and fit it in your log books. Of course that depends on any delays at shipper/receiver…etc… Being a Company driver, you don't have to worry about fuel costs and truck costs but the upside isnt quite as high.
If you run OTR nation wide, chances are you will only be home a couple times a month for the weekend, unless a run takes you by your house or you live in a large city with a lot of shippers/receivers in it.
Not sure if I answered your question…..sounds more like you are a company looking for drivers and wondering what is on THEIR minds. I was a fleet manager for 2 years so I thought I would throw in my 2 cents.
Well for me number one would be respect,I'm a female driver,I dont look like what people think most female drivers look like.(a man no offense). I'M a hairdresser turn truck driver, and I keep the salon appearance, very girly. So you can imagine. Anyway I team drive with my husband, so my wants may differ from yours. But if I was just getting started I would look for, lease purchase if you want to own your own truck ,and dont have upfront money to buy it.Fuel surcharge paid on all miles, no money down, 99% touch free freight, paid permits, trip pack, and mobile com, pre-planned dispatch, weekly checks, base plate program, safety bonus, direct deposit, sign on bonus , vacation pay, retirement plan, At least 2500 miles a week, and if your driving company truck make sure its not a piece of crap.Flexible home time, rider program, if your not a team driver, all your permits, pikes, tolls, lumpers and unloading paid.Dot spec,s medical, dental, life, disability, insurance. no touch freight,I think that about covers it. Hope it helps good luck and be safe out there!
